Then she gets a second chance.

When Carlene meets Nick, the single kiss they share awakens the desires she shoved aside for so long. Suddenly she wants more than what she believe she deserves. Will she ever see him again? And if she does, what will that mean for her?

A thing of fate.

Leaving the life she built on regret, Carlene waits for fate to intervene. But just as she begins to believe in a fresh start, she's forced to realize a horrible truth—one with the power to send her second chance crashing before it even takes off.

Wake Up Call
by
Victoria Ashley

 ~ Synopsis ~
Avery Hale had spent her whole childhood abused by her drunken, hopped-up parents. Broken from a lifetime of hate and pain she grew up realizing that trust and love just didn't exist. Not in her world at least.
After turning the age of eighteen, she packed up and moved far away determined to escape her hurtful past and start a new life. Once on her own she comes to the conclusion that the emptiness still exist. Doing what she had to to survive she found herself mixed up in exotic dancing and meaningless sexual relationships unable to feel anything, for anyone. She was sure that her life was worthless and there was nothing left for her. Or, she thought.
After meeting a beautiful stranger, jace, her life suddenly is turned upside down. Everything that she truly believed suddenly gets questioned and then she is left to figure out if there is really more to her than she could ever have imagined. Jace, having some secrets of his own puts the pain of his own past behind to do what he can to help Avery. Can the love of another broken person be enough to help Avery, or is she already too far gone?
Avery's life is pulled in many directions as she tries to find herself, and not everyone and thing is what they seem to be in this story of love, trust and opening up. Finding herself and learning to love herself might just be the hardest thing she's ever had to do.
~ Excerpt ~
"My heart stopped and suddenly it was hard to breathe. His voice always had that effect on me. It was like poison slowly running through my veins killing me bit by bit. Like a drug that I couldn't get enough of even though I was almost down to my last breath.
Jace took a step forward and grabbed my hand. He slowly trailed his fingers over my face and backed me into the wall. My heart stopped again if that was even possible. "You can't leave," he whispered. "I need you." His warm breath kissed my lips as he bit his bottom lip and placed both of his hands around my face. They were warm and soft to the touch. Too big for my fragile face, although I wanted to bury myself in them. "Breathe. There is no one here but the two of us. Breathe," he whispered.
~ Review ~
This was a quick and engaging read. This wasn't an all hearts and flowers story.  This was a story about survival, learning to love and trust yourself enough to love another.
Avery has overcome more than anyone should have to by the age of 18.  Running from her  abusive and neglected past she is trying to start a life for herself.  But life alone, with little money to survive will make you do things you never thought you would.
I felt for Avery, no one should be abused either mentally of physically.  The emotional scars she carries are deep and  her  reluctance to put her faith in another person understandable.    But when the person who reaches out to help has had his own battle with abuse there might be a chance.
Jace  saves Avery from an encounter on the street , but he saves her in more ways than one.   Jace appears to be a loner,  super hot and hot tempered.  But Avery brings him a sense of calm.  There is an connection almost instanteously and it brings them both a sense of belonging.
Jace was the ideal.  Super hot, protective and adoring.  He was careful not to push but wanted Avery to know that he was there for her if she would have him.
There were a few twists and turns in the story to give it just enough tension.  Avery discovers that she's a better judge of character than she gives herself credit for.
I was happy to see that through it all Avery and Jace were able to overcome their obstacles and find love and happiness with each other.

~ About the Author ~
My name is Wendi Hulsey. I was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin, just south of Milwaukee. After several vacations to the sunshine state, my husband and I fell in love with the warm weather and decided to have a house built in Florida. I miss my family and friends up north;however, I will never regret not having to shovel snow again. I have been a registered nurse for about ten years. I currently work on a medical/surgical unit, preferring to work the night shift.

My husband and I have been married for sixteen years, and I appreciate his support during this endeavor. I have one son who is a hard working grown man now living on his own. He has blessed me with the most precious grandson and a wonderful future daughter in law. My daughter is a beautiful and smart teenager who excels at just about anything she tries. She enjoys playing soccer and we have spent numerous hours on various soccer fields. I am blessed to have my mother, a retired cook, living with me and she is a great help with cooking, cleaning, and chauffeuring the teenager. Other members of our family include; one dog, one cat, two turtles and several fish.

My love for reading began at the age of twelve on a stormy day. With nothing to do I was bugging my mother, she said, “Go read a book.” I have never stopped. As a teenager, I preferred horror books, mainly Stephen King. As I age, my reading tastes change and I currently read mysteries, romance, or erotica. It has always been my dream to write a book. Although writing is a hobby for me, I hope to produce a book to the best of my abilities and hope you have enjoyed what you read. Thank you for your support.

~Excerpt ~
Though I had never done this before, it was clear what needed to be done.  Clicking on the camera icon, I started to snap pictures of the damage as I made my way to the bedroom to pack. There was even a photo of the crib tipped over before he came out of the bathroom and righted it.
Shane: Why are you still here?  Leave.  Get. Out.  Right. Now.
Walking to my closet, I pulled out two suitcases, one at a time.  I hadn’t set Kylie down for the last hour.  She was starting to feel heavy, but I ignored the pain.  I needed her safe and at the moment, that safety was only guaranteed in my arms.  Shane was too erratic.  This…was not the man I had married.  This…was not the man I dated and fell in love with.  That Shane, I never wanted to live without.  This man was a stranger and I had no trouble leaving him.
When he saw the second suitcase come out, he stiffened.  Opening Kylie’s drawers, I started loading her belongings into the waiting bag.  It wouldn’t take but a moment to get her clothes together; it was the medical supplies that would be so time consuming.
Shane: You aren’t taking my daughter.
me: Well, I’m not leaving her with you.
Shane: She’s my only child.
me: You can’t take care of her.  You can’t even take care of yourself right now.
Shane: Just how do you expect to take care of her?
It wouldn’t end.  As long as I kept responding, he would continue arguing with me.  I had no energy for that.  There were too many other concerns at the moment.
Shane: If you want to take her, you have to call the police.
Pausing, I waited for him to talk sense.  It wasn’t happening.  Finally, I caved and spoke.  There was an unspoken rule about involving the police.  I knew it.  He had made it.  Calling the police raised everything to the next level.  These things were handled in house, behind closed doors, even if many of those doors had holes.
