"Please talk to me, Gracie. Tell me what's wrong.
Why are you so goddamn scared of me?"
"I dont want you here," she choked out.
Her free hand went to her throat, rubbing as though it hurt her to speak. Fury raged inside him. Of course her throat hurt. There were visible hand and finger marks surrounding her slender throat. As if those bastards had choked her repeatedly.
Those words, those five simple words, gutted him to the core.
"Why?" he asked bluntly. "Why do you hate me so much Gracie? I loved you. I always loved you. And you left. God, do you have any idea the hell it's been wondering what happened to you twelve years ago? Not knowing if you were dead or alive. Somewhere hurting. In need of help. Didn't I deserve more than what you gave me? Not even a goodbye. Or "fuck off." You didn't even do me the service of breaking up with me. You just...disappeared."

Safe At Last is the 3rd installment in the Slow Burn series and could be read as a standalone but to best understand the characters that you will meet within this book it is best to start at the beginning of the series with Keep Me Safe.
One tormented and searching to find something lost. The other hiding and and trying to forget. This is Zack and Gracie's story and what a story it is.
What is a man to do when a routine job becomes more? When your job brings you face to face with your past and has your heartbeat thundering in your chest only to have it muted by the terror and screams of the one thing you have searched for 12 years?
Fight.....it was all Zack knew. His determination to recapture what was lost and get answers for all of the years he spent wondering had my heart soaring for him. His love for Gracie radiated from pages making you hope that they could have a second chance.
Gracie holds tightly to her belief of the events that transpired years ago to separate her and Zack. Shattered from the experience she has become sort of a recluse and trusts almost no one. Seeing Zack after all these years causes fear and anger to rise in her setting them off on an emotional roller coaster.
I felt for Gracie. The conflict she felt towards the man she had loved more than life itself and the injustice done to her at his hands would be hard for any woman to take. How can you forgive the unforgiveable?
When Gracie's life is put in danger because of her association with Zack he takes charge of situation and sets off to protect Gracie and get to the truth beneath the lies that separated them. But uncovering the truth may be more that Zack can take.
The story kept me engaged from page one right through to the end. Every page bringing more angst, hope and understanding than the last. The story has many twists and turns. Just when you think that you know where the story is going Maya takes the story in a different direction. The story is action packed and allows you to catch up with Caleb, Ramie, Beau and Ari from the first two installments. The combined efforts of all of the characters in seeking justice restores Gracie's "gift" and brings clarity that she can no longer deny.
