Release Day Blitz & Review
ShutterGirl

by
C.D. Reiss
~ Synopsis ~

I am not hurt.

I don’t need a second chance with him, or a life I thought I had.

While he was out forgetting me to become a movie star, I was building a career out of nothing. A career as a paparazzi, but a career. For a foster kid who bounced around every home in Los Angeles, that wasn’t easy.

This camera is all I have.

He’s nothing to me. Every time I take his picture and sell it, I remind myself that I did it all without him or his approval, his cinnamon smell or his clear green eyes. He lights up the screen like a celestial body, but he’s nothing but a paycheck to me.

He can throw my camera off a balcony, and nothing has to change. We can stay king and queen of the same city, and different worlds.

Except this is Hollywood, and here, anything can happen.

~ Excerpt ~
I stroked his hair, waist deep in peace, all worry gone for the moment, and floating in no more than an ocean of gratitude. I must have been more vulnerable than I realized, or he’d reopened some wound with his kindness, because though my sweet reverie stayed, as the minutes passed, a layer of need fitted itself on top of it.
I needed to tell him, if not the details, the outlines of who I was.
“I want you to know,” I whispered, starting somewhere small, then everything I didn’t want to say spilled out. “I have stuff. I’ve never been to jail, but you know, it’s stuff, and it’s ugly, and it scares me. Because, I mean, you’re so perfect, and I’m… I’m just a mess. I’m not whole. I’m a bunch of pieces of a person I cobbled together.” My eyes got wet when I thought of the comparisons between us and that picture in my silverware drawer. “So if you have to move on when you realize that, I’ll understand. You have an image, and if anyone understands protecting a career, it’s me. I mean, I’ll be mad, don’t get that wrong, but also.” I swallowed and blinked, shifting my head so he wouldn’t feel the tear on his forehead. “I won’t blame you.”
I waited for an answer. Anything. A change in position or a word on any subject. The weather. Sports. Something. But all he did was breathe.
I smiled so wide, tears fell into my mouth. He was sleeping.

~ Review ~
I was very excited to see that CD Reiss was coming out with a standalone a bit different from her other series and I must say she did an AMAZING job!  She delivered a story with angst, passion, choices, consequences and with characters you easily fell in love with and routed for.

Laine and Michael come from very different upbringings but it's those differences that make them whole.  Laine's ability to overcome her past and make a life for herself is intriguing to Michael.  He has always allowed public perception dictate his choices but with Laine he feels...and that's something he hasn't done in a long time.

It feels like a lifetime ago that they met and their lives have taken different directions, him the hunted, her the hunter.  But the feelings that Laine has always felt for Michael never diminished.  She had just gotten used to admiring him through her lens.

The chemistry between Michael and Laine was definitely palpable.  I couldn't wait to see what would happen between them every time the met up. The tender moments they shared and the guilt Laine felt for what Michael's association to her would do to him had my emotions all over the place.

Can you cross a line that's drawn in the sand that is meant to keep your two worlds apart?  Are you able to sacrifice all that you know to have the one thing you've been missing?  Guess you are going to have to grab your copy of ShutterGirl and see if Michael and Laine can beat the odds.

Author Note:  If you know me, you know my Submission and Corruption books. This is different. This is about love and loss, ambition and talent, and our commitments to ourselves and each other. I don't close the door on the expression of love, but this is not the usual dirty pleasure.

  ~ About the Author ~
CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

~ Excerpt ~
“I broke a nail!” I screamed as pain shot up my finger. “No!” Kane cried. Multiple footsteps pounded down the hallway and then bodies burst into Kane’s bedroom. “What?” All his brothers hollered as they piled through the doorway. Kane pointed a trembling hand at me. “Her nail! She broke her nail!” With a perplexed look I looked at Kane then to the brothers who all gasped and flung their hands over their mouths. They all gripped onto furniture, or onto one another to stay upright. I was so confused. I had no fucking idea what was going on. None. “Your nail?” Alec screeched. Nico placed his hands on the side of his head and shook it from side to side. “Anything but your nail!” Ryder rushed over to me and grabbed the hand I was cradling and thoroughly examined it, and when he saw confirmation that my nail was gone, he whimpered. “It’s gone. Gone forever!” “No!” Kane wailed, fell back onto his bed, and flung his arms over his face. “Why did it have to her nail? Why, God? WHY?” I glared at Kane, then his brothers. The bastards were taking the piss out of me, and my broken nail. “I hate you all.” I said then turned and walked out of the room. I made it half way down the stairs before I heard the eruption of belly rumbling male laughter, and even though it pleased me greatly that they were smiling again, I hated that it was at my expense. “Bloody brothers,” I grumbled.

I’m browsing through emails on my phone as I ride the elevator down to the lobby. It halts on the third floor, and I back up to let more people on. I don’t lift my head up as the elevator starts again, but suddenly I’m hit with the sound of laughter.
It’s innocent, young, and vibrant. I’m intrigued, so I shift my body to get a better view of her. My eyes find the young girl in the front by the doors. I watch her from the side and notice she’s on her phone. She’s smiling wide and laughing with whomever she’s speaking to on the phone. The doors slide open, and I walk around a few people to exit, except the girl doesn’t move and I crash right into the back of her, pushing us both out of the elevator before the doors close. Instinctively, I wrap my free arm around her waist to catch her from face planting the floor. Her back is pressed against my chest and for a moment, I don’t want to let go.
Her phone isn’t as lucky. It slips out of her hand and lands on the lobby floor.
“Shit,” she curses and my arm frees her to bend down and grab it off the floor.
“I’m so sorry,” I begin apologizing as I step back. My eyes wonder to her bare legs and up her tone thighs to a pair of black workout shorts. She’s wearing a baggy sweatshirt as if she’d been running or working out. I can smell the fresh sweat on her, but it doesn’t turn me off. In fact, it does the exact opposite.
“That’s okay.” Her voice cracks as she turns around, and I finally get a good look at her. “Oh, Mr. Leighton,” she says surprised, and I immediately curse the bad luck that brings me to my new intern—Casey West.
“Miss West?” I finally say as she stares up at me in silence. “I thought you weren’t coming until Saturday?”
“Hide your disappointment, Mr. Leighton.” The corners of her mouth perk up into a cocky smile. “I was just picking up the paperwork and doing all the background check questions.” Her witty personality is spot on just like the last time.
Everyone that works or interns at Leighton Enterprises goes through an extensive background check for security reasons. All of the files are confidential, and only journalists reporting on the stories can know the exclusive information.
“Ah, yes. Of course, the paperwork.”
Paul failed to mention she’d be here today…
She continues eyeing me, and I wonder if she feels the electricity between us as much as I do.
“Well, I’ll see you Saturday, Mr. Leighton,” she says as she is seductively smiling up at me. She quickly turns around and begins walking toward the lobby doors.
I put my phone in my pocket and shake the thoughts of Casey out of my head. This is crazy. I can’t think of her like that. She’s my goddamn intern.

This is the first installment in the series and was definitely a quick, enjoyable and steamy read.  But I expected nothing less from Brooke.  Yes, she left me wanting more and I cannot wait to see how Ceci gets herself out of the predicament she finds herself in.
Hello Bentley…..yum!  He is all sorts of sexy, dominant and a bit snarky too.  You could feel the sizzle between Ceci and him from the start.
Ceci is a bit of a daredevil. I mean not every 18 year old steals her sister’s identity to get an internship with the hopes of unraveling the mystery surrounding her father’s death.   Looks like she will have her work cut out for her but having the up and coming CEO in your bed may just be an advantage.
I can’t wait to see where Brooke takes this story.  The second installment is due out in June.

Cover Design: Cover It! Designs

Synopsis

This isn't your typical girl meets boy.
There isn't a glass slipper or Prince Charming.
I've lived it and now it will be told.
Welcome to my personal hell...

I once saved lives and now... I can so easily end them.

Women are drawn to me like a moth to the flame, and like the moth not all of them continue on. Some are broken, others are damaged, and a few never make it out... but it's their decision. Only they often don't know that until it's too late.

Fuck the rules, I create my own in a world where I have nothing left to lose. Living is a game, and I'm the reigning champion by being stronger and smarter than my prey.

This is your warning. If you radiate vulnerability... Well, you could be my next victim. Don't try to hide. I'm not easily eluded.

Chapter 1

Sometimes people strive to be different, to step out of the fucking box, only to be misunderstood. The public doesn't understand me but who really gives a fuck. Who are they? Mice. They go to work every single day and spin the same wheel that gets them nowhere. Work. Marriage. Kids. Die.
I search for adventure.
I love control.
When I find trouble, I make it my bitch.
Everyone calls me Abbot. First name isn't needed. I truly believe there is power in a name. My friends respect me, my enemies fear me, and regardless of what I do, at the end of the day I'm still a killer. Apparently, that's what defines me.

~ About the Author ~
Words make the world go round. I love to write, travel, and sing really loud at the top of my lungs in the shower. Sweet love stories (along with the dirty ones) make me gush. I am firm believer that a person can never have too many cats or cups of coffee, and that the F word is necessary.
Forget the beach! Give me a gel pen, a stack of blank paper, and beautiful mountains!
